What is the Indus (“Sindu”) Valley Treaty? Why is it important?
- This is an important treaty for Pakistan.
- Pak will obtain approximately four-fifths (80%) of the water in the six rivers under this agreement
- These rivers are: Vyas, Raavi, Satluj, Sindhu, Chenab, Jehlam
- Under the treaty, India receives water from Vyas, Raavi and Satluj, but Pak gets it from Sindhu, Chenab and Jehlam (India uses the east river, Pakistan uses the western river)
- In 1960, then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlalnehru and Pakistani President Ayub Khan signed the agreement.
