In a critical move, Tech Giant Google reportedly fired hundreds of employees from the platform and devices department, the team behind Android software, Pixel smartphones and Chrome browsers.

This happens several months after offering voluntary acquisitions to workers in the same unit in January and then informing them of ongoing structural changes within the organization.

Efficient push after team merger

According to the information, a Google spokesperson confirmed that layoffs are part of the company’s efforts to improve efficiency and agility. These changes are aimed at streamlining operations following the merger of platform and device teams last year.

“As part of this effort, we implemented several job cuts in addition to the voluntary exit programmes previously offered,” the report added.

Cost reductions amid changing market dynamics

The exact number of layoffs has not been disclosed, but the move reflects a larger scheme of cost containment and operational streamlining at Google. Like many tech companies, Google changes its workforce structure to meet the ever-overwhelming focus of changing business needs and economic power.

This trend has become increasingly common as global companies face challenges including rapid AI adoption and financial uncertainty.

Wideer wave of global employment cuts

Amazon plans to settle around 14,000 managers based on a plan that is likely to save around $3 billion each year. Meanwhile, Intel is set up to do a massive internal renovation after a massive loss on its 2024 account.

Similarly, investment banking giant Goldman Sachs is said to have cut its workforce by 3-5% after performance reviews. Bank of America has already cut back on the role of 150 junior bunkers, but many of the affected people are offering alternative positions. As AI becomes more integrated into business operations, businesses are increasingly prioritizing automation and cost optimization.
