Julia Keige (Professor of Economics, Science PO) and David Yanagizawa Drotto (Professor of Economics, University of Zurich) 2025 Yrjö Jahnsson Award For influential research on politics and economy and the media.

Spanning France, America and Africa, Kage and Willagizawadrott’s work highlights the powerful influence of media, including social media, in shaping political beliefs and actions. They warn against risks associated with controlled media and highlight the importance of media independence for a robust democracy.

Founded in 1993 by the Yrjö Jahnsson Foundation in Finland, the prestigious award recognizes European economists under the age of 45 who have made significant contributions to theoretical and applied research essential to the European economic field.

Chaired by Kalina Manova, the awards committee, including members Esther Duflo, Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln, Ari Hyytinen and Marco Ottaviani, chose Cagé and Yanagizawa-Drott for groundbreaking work in the political and media areas. Their research highlights the important need for a free and independent media landscape to adhere to democratic principles and prevent the potentially harmful effects of media manipulation.
