Jetzero Inc. On Thursday, it announced plans to build the first manufacturing plant for the next generation of passenger jets in central North Carolina.
The California-based startup is planning to build a factory at the Greensboro airport and invest $4.7 billion. According to Gov. Josh Stein, the planned employment from 2027 to 2036 is the biggest job commitment in North Carolina history.
The company previously built Greensboro, one of the three finalists at the factory, and built a fixed-wing-Z4 aircraft, also known as a full-wing or blend wing, and said that Jetsro is up to 50% more fuel efficient than traditional tube and wing air passengers.
Jetzero says it has raised approximately $300 million by 2027 to invest in the Z4 project, including US Air Force grants to build and fly demonstrator models.
United Airlines and Alaska Airlines are also project investors and have a conditional purchase agreement for the fleet, the company said. Jetzero aims to get a job with the goal of fully producing planes in the early 2030s and completing 20 planes a month.
Stein was on hand with Jetzero executives and other officials for a formal announcement at Greensboro’s Piedmont Triad International Airport, citing the first manned flight at Kitty Hawk by the Wright brothers in 1903, as well as the robust aerospace industry in North Carolina, and the first manned flight.
“North Carolina is the perfect place,” Stein said. “North Carolina was the first to fly. We are also the future of flights.”
According to the state Department of Commerce, employment will pay a minimum average salary of over $89,000. This project provided details of the aforementioned project by the State Commission awarding economic incentives.
Jetzero’s state and local financial and training incentives and projects described at the committee meeting could exceed $2.35 billion by the 2060s if investment and job creation thresholds and other requirements are met.
A portion of the state incentives awarded by the committee (over $1 billion over 37 years) is based on the percentage of income tax withheld from plant workers’ pay. The incentives include up to $785 million from Guilford County and Greensboro, as well as up to $450 million from the General Assembly to support infrastructure, officials said. The project includes research facilities for complex structures.
Commerce officials said Jetslo, headquartered in Long Beach, California, had looked at 25 sites in 17 states and had been searching for a factory location for more than a year.
Now with just 225 workers, Jetzero enters the jet buying market dominated by US-based Boeing and European Airbus.
“We already show strong commercial interest and momentum to meet the true airline demand for this aircraft,” CEO Tom O’Leary said. “So this isn’t just a factory. It’s the launchpad for a new chapter in American aerospace.”
The Z4 variant has tanker and transport use in the military, but Jetzero says it will initially focus on the construction of commercial jetliners ranging from around 250 seats and 5,000 nautical miles.
The five-year-old company says the plane’s shape reduces drag and makes engine installations on the top and back of the plane much quieter than traditional passenger planes. The Z4 runs on traditional jet fuel, but according to Jetzero, it can be converted to hydrogen fuel.
Jetzero says the aisles aren’t crowded as Z4 travelers walk through large doors, board the shorter but wider cabin, and the bathrooms are far from the galley where food is served.
“We plan to provide a better passenger experience on other planes than before,” O’Leary said.
Stein said the state already has more than 400 aerospace companies. And Piedmont Tetriad Airport has emerged as an industry hotspot.Honda AircraftI’ll put that headquarters thereBoom UltrasoundBuild the first full-scale manufacturing plant for the next generationSupersonic passenger jet.
